Pramuka Island: Strategic Location for Mangrove Planting & Coral Reef Restoration
Jakarta, 7 November 2025 — In the midst of the roar of big cities and dense human activity, there is an island that holds great potential as well as big challenges for biodiversity conservation: Pramuka Island, in the Seribu Islands area. The marine environment around the Tanjung Elang Child-Friendly Integrated Public Area (RPTRA) on Pramuka Island has coral reef resources which should be a center for marine ecotourism based on education, conservation and ecology – but currently the ecosystem has experienced significant damage due to human activities and natural factors.
Based on research results, the condition of live coral cover in Pramuka Island waters shows a figure between 20.65% to 47.17%, which is categorized as “moderate to damaged” (Fadhiilah, 2023).
Meanwhile, other research states that hard coral cover on this island ranges from 6%–34.8% at a depth of 3 m and 9.3%–49.5% at a depth of 7 m (Ardiansyah et al., 2013). These findings remind that without appropriate intervention, the potential of Pramuka Island’s ecosystem could be eroded further. Even though this area is very close to the capital city area and has great opportunities for developing ecotourism and involving local communities.
Responding to these conditions, the LindungiHutan conservation organization chose Pramuka Island as the main location for its mangrove planting and coral reef rehabilitation program. This program not only involves planting mangroves but also coral restoration activities in the open ocean, so it can become a field workshop for communities, students, researchers and tourists who are interested in marine conservation.
“Plukan Pramuka offers a meeting point between a very vulnerable ecosystem and a great opportunity to revive damaged reefs. We see here not just planting trees, but habitat restoration which can be a learning space for many parties,” said a representative from ProtectHutan.
The conservation program on Pramuka Island includes a series of important steps designed in an integrated manner to restore and maintain the balance of the coastal ecosystem. Activities began with planting mangroves along the coastline, which function to strengthen cliffs, protect the coast from abrasion, and provide an important habitat for various marine biota.
On the other hand, coral reef transplantation efforts are carried out using scientific methods, involving local communities and research institutions so that the process not only has an ecological impact, but also enriches public knowledge about marine conservation.
Apart from that, the development of educational ecotourism is also being promoted to open up new economic opportunities for local communities, as well as raise public awareness of the importance of preserving the sea.
No less important, this program also encourages the empowerment of coastal communities to become part of the solution, through activities such as coral cultivation, sustainable snorkeling tourism, and the development of locally based green economy products.
With the condition of coral reefs still relatively good compared to many points in Indonesia, Pramuka Island is an example of the urgency of real action.
A report confirms that in western Indonesia, the percentage of reefs with live cover >50% is only around 23%. This further strengthens the reasons why Pramuka Island needs to be a conservation focus.
Conservation activities include designing field workshops, research and educational programs that connect humans with nature.
Thus, ProtectHutan invites schools, universities, environmental communities and companies to make Pramuka Island a location for practical work activities (workshop field) in mangrove and coral conservation, as well as as a bridge between research, education and real action.
“We believe that the location closest to the challenge is the most appropriate location for learning and action. Pramuka Island is a place where conservation ideas can become a reality,” added the LindungiHutan representative.
For information, the public can get to know more closely the initiatives and impacts of conservation in this area through the official Pramuka Island page at LindungiHutan. There, the public can also participate directly through tree donations, planting activities, and field collaboration to maintain the sustainability of the Seribu Islands ecosystem.
