Rea empowered more than 600 self -help farmers in East Kalimantan for EUDR compliance and RSPO certification with technical support from the colltiva
Rea runs the Shines program to support more than 600 self -help farmers in Kutai, East Kalimantan, in obtaining RSPO certification and fulfilling the EUDR requirements, through the use of garden devices and assessment. Coltitrace platforms belonging to the colltiva are used to map and verify agricultural land polygons in 10 cooperatives in East Kalimantan, as part of support for the Shines program. The program aims to protect up to 10,000 hectares of forest areas and support 6 target villages through biodiversity and livelihood initiatives. Non -governmental farmers will also get market incentives, digital training, and partial payment support to meet the European Union regulation and secure long -term market access.
PT Rea Kaltim Plantations (REA) continues to strengthen the implementation of the Shines (Smallholder Inclusion for Ethical Sourcing) program to improve the welfare of self -help farmers through RSPO certification and compliance with European Union Deforestation Regulations (EUDR). Launched in October 2024, the Shines program involved collaboration with corporate partners to encourage transformative changes and strengthen shared responsibilities in all supply chains.
Rea is a palm oil producer that has been committed to sustainable and inclusive production since 1989. As a subsidiary of Rea Holdings PLC listed on the London Stock Exchange, Rea has an operating area in Balikpapan and East Kalimantan. Rea operations include oil palm plantations, palm oil processing factory, and palm kernel destruction facilities, and are supported by forest conservation efforts of approximately 18,000 hectares. Through initiatives such as the Shines program, Rea aims to increase the compliance with RSPO certified supply chains, encourage increased productivity, and open long -term market access for self -help farmers, in line with the development of international regulations such as EUDR.
“The inclusion of self -help farmers is the key to sustainable development,” said Bremen Yong, Group Chief Sustainability Officer Rea. “Shines is an initiative that has a strong business foundation, which unites stakeholders in all value chains to encourage transformative changes, improve welfare, and strengthen the integrity of the supply chain,” he added.
Through program intervention, Rea ensures that producers comply with international regulations and gain better access to economic opportunities. A number of self-help farmers’ cooperatives in Kutai Kartanegara, namely the Prosperous Plantation Cooperative, Mutual Affairs, Tunas Harapan, Bina Wana Sejahtera, and Penoon Work, receive training, technical support, and market incentives for those who meet the EUDR provisions and industrial standards. This support aims to ensure long -term compliance and open sustainable market access for farmers.
The colliva supports shines through the mapping of farmers and technology
As part of the component of exposure and compliance in this program, Rea cooperates with Koltiva, an agritech company from Swiss-Indonesia, to provide technical support in mapping land polygons, garden evaluation, and the application of coltitrace search platforms. This comprehensive solution will help more than 600 self -help farmers in ensuring full compliance with EUDR requirements.
“Collaboration of Coltiva with Rea emphasizes our joint commitment in building a tough and sustainable palm oil supply chain,” said Manfred Borer, CEO and Co-Founder of Koltiva. “By integrating the garden assessment, technology adaptation through coltitrace, as well as training on good agricultural practices (GAP), we help producers deal with regulatory landscapes that continue to develop while increasing their economic prospects in the long run,” he added. The colltival approach combines innovative digital solutions with direct intervention in the field, ensuring producers can face the complexity of global sustainability standards effectively.
Related to this program, the colltiva is currently implementing the coltitrace platform in ten cooperatives in East Kalimantan, focusing on mapping and verifying farmers’ land boundaries. This digital tracement infrastructure is an important foundation for the verification of land legality and sustainable monitoring as required in the RSPO and EUDR standards.
The readiness of self -help farmers in Indonesia to EUDR regulations is still very limited. About 41% of the total national oil palm plantation land – around 6.7 million hectares – managed by self -help farmers. However, the study shows that only 1% have been certified “clean and clear”, namely meeting the requirements of exposure and legality according to EUDR standards. The main obstacles include the lack of geololization data, unclear land ownership status, and the absence of digital systems. Without quick steps, many farmers are at risk of losing access to the European Union market due to this new regulation (Palm Oil Monitor, 2023).
The Shines program is present to answer the gap by providing tools and support needed by farmers to achieve trace, certification, and compliance. This program is a concrete step in bridging the gap, as well as opening real opportunities for farmers to meet the regulation of regulation and maintain long -term access to the global market.
In the next phase, the colltiva will support the application of the segregation features requested in the renewal of the Farmgate coltitrace system. This feature allows suppliers to separate fresh fruit bunches (FFB) that have met the EUDR standards from those that have not, since the collection point. This step answers one of the core provisions in the EUDR regulation, which requires commodities from land that has been verified of compliance to be physically separated from land that does not yet have supporting evidence.
Beyond compliance: the impact on landscapes and livelihoods
Along with the increasingly tight regulatory framework such as EUDR, initiatives such as Shines play an important role in ensuring that producers are ready to face the demands of compliance that continues to develop. The level of readiness to EUDR significantly increases producer access to the premium market, emphasizing the importance of this kind of program in ensuring long -term sustainability and economic resilience.
More than just compliance, Shines also supports positive impacts on a wider landscape scale. This program includes conservation of up to 10,000 hectares of forest areas outside the concession area, strengthening biodiversity connectivity, as well as the launch of the livelihood program in the six target villages. Shines are also designed to ensure a fair value distribution throughout the supply chain by supporting the provision of price incentives for certified palm oil from self -help farmers.
“The Shines program has a transformative impact on the livelihood of self -help farmers and sustainable palm oil production, by bridging the gap between producers and the demands of the global market,” said Jusupta Tarigan, IMPACT Program Manager for the Palm Oil sector in the Colletiza.
