Director of Scientific Engagement PMI Tomoka Iida, said that the presence of a variety of smoke -free products based on the concept of harm reduction can make a significant contribution to improving the quality of public health.

Japan and Sweden are a clear example of how smoke -free product innovation contributes positively in reducing the prevalence of smoking. In Japan, the prevalence of smoking at the age of 20 years and over drops from 20.1% (2011) to 9.4% (2023).

In Sweden, the contribution of the use of nicotine pockets, which was introduced in 1973, as an alternative to switching from smoking also correlated with improving the quality of public health. Sweden recorded cases of lung cancer (lung cancer incident) in men about 17 cases per 100,000 population. This figure is much lower when compared to the average European Union country which is in the range of 42 cases.

“This is the core of reducing the danger of tobacco. When you have a product that is scientifically proven better than cigarettes, and adult smokers have access to switch, you will really see the impact at the population level,” Tomoko said at Technovation 2025 in Jakarta, Wednesday (2/7/2025).

Meanwhile, Sampoerna Marketing Director Andre Dahan, said that the smoke -free products presented by Sampoerna were very diverse. For the heated tobacco product category, Sampoerna presents Iqos Iluma I and Bonds by Iqos. Both of these smoke-free products, each, have variants of Teaa Clove and Blends by A, which use native Indonesian cloves, and is the first in the world. This product is available in 20 major cities in Indonesia.

For the Vape category, Sampoerna has Veev One and Veev Now. Both are developed through strict testing to answer the needs of adult consumers who want to find better alternatives. Then for the nicotine bag portfolio, Sampoerna has zyn used orally. At present, Zyn is available exclusively in Jakarta and Bali as part of a gradual introduction strategy and market research.

“We believe that the innovations presented by Sampoerna can answer the needs of adult nicotine consumers who are looking for better smoke -free alternatives. We are also optimistic that the existence of this smoke -free product will be an important part of creating improvements in the quality of public health in Indonesia,” Andre concluded.
