KAI Strengthens Level Crossing Safety Ahead of 2025/2026 Nataru Transport
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) continues to strengthen level crossing safety as part of its preparation for Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 (Nataru 2025/2026) transportation. This effort is made to support safe, orderly and smooth community mobility in line with the increasing intensity of train travel and traffic activity in various regions during the year-end holidays.
KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that level crossings are one of the crucial points in the transportation safety system. Therefore, KAI consistently organizes, closes risky crossings, and increases security at priority points through collaboration with local governments and related stakeholders.
“A level crossing is a shared space between train travel and road users. Safety at this point will be optimally maintained when adequate infrastructure goes hand in hand with public discipline and vigilance,” said Anne.
From January to November 2025, KAI has closed 193 level crossings, both registered and unregistered. This step is part of KAI’s ongoing commitment to reduce potential risks and create a safer travel environment for train passengers and road users.
KAI data shows that the number of level crossings continues to decline from year to year. In 2024, there will be 3,896 level crossings consisting of 2,803 registered crossings and 1,093 unregistered crossings. Of this number, 1,832 crossings have been guarded, while 971 crossings have not been guarded.
Entering 2025, the number of level crossings will decrease to 3,703 points, with details of 2,776 registered crossings and 927 unregistered crossings. In the same period, the number of unguarded crossings decreased to 912 points, while guarded crossings increased to 1,864 points. This decrease in the number of crossings reflects KAI’s strengthening commitment to improving safety and orderliness of traffic around railway lines.
Along with these arrangements, KAI is also focusing on improving safety at crossings with a high level of risk. Based on the results of field identification and evaluation, there are 1,638 level crossings that require safety improvements. By considering the level of risk, urgency of handling, and availability of resources, KAI determined 50 level crossings as an initial priority.
“Of the 50 national priority crossings, there are 10 crossings that require immediate safety improvements. One of them was designated as the initial inauguration point and is part of the 2025/2026 Nataru Transport service readiness,” explained Anne.
The ten priority level crossings are spread across Operational Area 1 Jakarta, Daop 3 Cirebon, Daop 4 Semarang, Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Daop 8 Surabaya, and Daop 9 Jember. Handling is focused on strengthening crossing security, arranging safety facilities, and increasing cross-sector coordination.
Anne added that the success of improving level crossing safety also requires the active role of the community. KAI invites all road users to always prioritize train travel, obey signs, and stop and ensure safe conditions before crossing.
“Safety is the result of joint work. By disciplined traffic at level crossings, we help maintain the safety of ourselves, train passengers and the smooth mobility of the community during the Nataru Transport,” concluded Anne.
